EU REGULATORY UPDATE | Regulation (EU) 2024/1689
Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 entered into force on 1 August 2024, beginning a phased timetable for the EU AI Act.
AI systems used for recruitment, selection, employment decisions, task allocation and performance monitoring may fall within the high-risk framework. Prohibited practices and literacy duties also become relevant according to the statutory timetable.
A multinational may not know that a local vendor or global platform has introduced AI into an existing workflow. Employment risk arises from use and effect, not from whether the product is marketed as artificial intelligence.
Employers should inventory systems, identify vendors and decision owners, and assess data protection, discrimination, monitoring and human oversight. Procurement should require employment review before any new AI-enabled module is activated.
